BASELINE SHIFT

BASELINE SHIFT

A series of student organised talks, welcoming guest speakers for the students of Graphic Communication.

Between 2022–2024, I worked on a team of 5 students to deliver weekly guest lectures for students at the University of Reading.

Taking on the team leader role in the 23–24 academic year taught me leadership skills, and working with many moving parts.

From UX Design to the importance of diversity and ethics, our team has brought a variety of inspiring insights to the students. Each week we hear different perspectives on what design careers can amount to and industry tips, which give the students education and networking opportunities unique to the University of Reading. Roles within the team include social media and print promotion, writing blog posts (available to read here) and hosting the sessions, but most importantly working and communicating with students and speakers.

As students, post-graduate careers can be difficult to foresee with limited ideas of what offices, a day or a year might look like in the life of a design professional. It is an opportunity to see how smaller design studios work, in comparison to larger studios and in-house designers or educators.

Our speakers over the years have delivered consistently enriching sessions, and in the team has been proud to assist students in developing professional connections.

The team with Aanand Tank, guest speaker and a Graduate of the Department

Part 1 Student, 2024

‘There was an excellent range of speakers from several disciplines/career paths.’

Part 3 Student, 2024

‘Hearing from less traditional speakers (motion graphics etc) was really useful as it's something we don't get much experience of in the course.’
